Get staff to review their performance

At the end of each month, ask all staff who have customer contact to tell you how much time they spent:

• handling customer complaints

• building customer relationships

• making follow-up calls

• learning about their customers’ businesses

• finding opportunities to do more business with existing customers

• finding opportunities for new products and services.

Ask them to compare this with the amount of time they spent shuffling paper or just taking orders.
