Business Success - Remembering to follow up

There's a great story I retell often at conferences. It's 'owned' by Wayne McCarthy, one of the top real estate agents of Barfoot and Thompson. The story goes back five years. Wayne met a couple from England in 2000 and worked with them for two years house hunting in Auckland during the summers. They bought a home (online from England from another agent & company), yet for a further three years, Wayne continued to stay in touch with them with a 3/4 monthly "good day, how are you, if you need a tradesman or anything let me know" emai. Yes, Even though they weren't clients.

December 2005
It's five years on.This past December Wayne gets a call. "Come over for drinks Wayne". It's the English couple. "We're not coming to Auckland as much as we thought so would you sell the house for us?" "Of course" Wayne replies "but what about the agent you bought the house from?" "Well, we never heard from him again after he sold us the house. You've been loyal so we've called you".

What's the point?

  • Persistence – 5 years
  • Continued though business was lost
  • System
  • Relationship building – NOT BUGGING

    Your System
To build a similar reminder system for yourself - why not use the Task Function of your Outlook software ( Lotus notes- to do lists) and set up a recurring Task to remind yourself to call, visit, follow up on important clients and prospects? Tasks live in Outlook (not Express) below the Sent Items.
